At Junction 25 of the M5 take the A358 West, go round the roundabout under the motorway following the signs to Taunton. Follow the dual carriageway to Taunton and Minehead, the A358.

Keeping left at the first roundabout go straight on at the traffic lights, past Creech Castle on your right. After the traffic lights position yourself in the right hand lane ready to turn right at the next roundabout, about a mile further on and signed to Minehead, A358. After the viaduct turn left at the roundabout, again signed the A358 to Minehead. Keeping in the right hand lane go straight over the traffic lights, still on the A358, within 200 yards you need to be in the left hand lane at the next traffic lights ready to fork left 100 yards later on the A358 to Minehead.

After about a mile go straight over the mini roundabout (A358 to Minehead). Go through two sets of traffic lights for pedestrians and straight over the next roundabout. At the next roundabout take the left turn to Norton Fitzwarren, Milverton, Wiveliscombe and Barnstaple on the B3227. The road will now generally be signed to Milverton and Wiveliscombe.

Go through Norton Fitzwarren which is the former home of the Taunton cider making industry, now sadly shut. It also reputedly has an excellent fish and chip shop on the left. Continue through Norton Fitzwarren on to Milverton. As you enter Milverton, ½ mile after Preston Bowyer, turn right at the roundabout, thus staying on the B3227 to Wiveliscombe and Barnstaple.

b3227

Near Bampton

Go straight through Wiveliscombe, staying on the B3227 to Barnstaple until you reach Bampton.

Coming into Bampton follow the signs to South Molton on the B3227. As you reach Bampton, on the right, you might like to make a detour to Wimbleball Lake Water Park.

A couple of miles after Bampton (look for the bridge) at a staggered junction go across the A396, staying on the B3227 to South Molton. Go straight across the roundabout, signed Barnstaple A361, then turn left onto the A361 signed Barnstaple.

After a mile turn left at the roundabout, still the B3227, to South Molton. Drive through South Molton following the signs to Barnstaple, then fork left onto the B3227, signed Torrington.

Torrington

Torrington from the east

It is worth making a detour to The Bell at Chittlehampton where the food is good, the beer excellent but sadly children welcome.

In Umberleigh turn right onto the A377 towards Barnstaple, within ½ mile turn left onto the B3227 to Atherington and Torrington.

At Umberleigh you cross the River Taw which flows into the sea at Bideford Bay.

Continue on through Atherington and on to Torrington. Coming into Torrington you might like to pay a visit to Dartington Glass. On arriving in Torrington go straight over both roundabouts taking the road signed Bideford.

Take the A386 out of Torrington, signed Bideford, and at the edge of Torrington turn left onto the B3227 to Langtree and Holsworthy.

Taddiport

The bridge over the river Torridge at Taddiport

Follow the road through Taddiport and approximately 1½ miles further on at the bottom of a dip you will come to Watergate Bridge, on the left is a good place to stretch your legs, go for a walk or a bicycle ride on the Tarka Trail.

The road then goes through Langtree, which is a traffic calming nightmare and on to Stibb Cross.

As you approach Stibb Cross, at the Union Inn, do not turn right onto the A388 signed Bideford, but 100yards further on turn right onto the road signed Woolsery and Clovelly. Follow this road about 5 miles until you have to give way at a crossroads. Turn left and follow the road into Bradworthy.
